Sports injuries are caused by a trauma of different degree. Injury can be divided into traumatic injuries, caused by large forces (macrotrauma), and overuse syndromes, caused by repetitive microtrauma.

Injury can be specific throughout areas the body:

Neck                      Shoulder                 Thigh

Upper back              Elbow                     Knee

Lower Back             Forearm                 Lower Leg

Hip                         Wrist                      Ankle

Groin                      Hand                      Foot

Of which listed below could be those that are affected:

  • Muscle
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Bone

When treating an injury the same principle applies – to make it better. However rehabilitation of that injury will depend on mechanism of injury (how it happened), injury type, the stage of healing and the individual themselves.

Rehabilitation Methods:

  • R.I.C.E. (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
  • Cryotherapy (Cold treatment therapy)
  • Massage
  • Soft Tissue Release
  • Electrotherapy
  • Stretching Exercises
  • Strengthening Exercises
Rehabilitation programmes are tailor made to suit the individuals needs using some or all of the above methods. They may be passive (solely the therapist applying the technique) or active (involving the injured individual). All are safe and effective methods to treat injury.
