Muscles often contain specific areas of tightness, perhaps due to fibrotic changes or scar tissue formation resulting from overuse or injury. STR can be applied to all major muscle groups. The technique works by fixing a specific area of the muscle, which prevents an area of the muscle from moving. This in turn localises the stretch a specific region of the muscle therefore encouraging specific tight fibres to stretch. STR can be solely used to treat an injury, or be used as part of a treatment protocol. It can be applied actively or passively, through clothing, or a towel, or part of a massage treatment.
